I'm Nelly, an electrician working across Nairobi, and I take on the full range of electrical work rather than sticking to one narrow corner of it. That covers wiring and rewiring, installing sockets, switches and lighting points, fitting and upgrading distribution boards, changing faulty breakers, running power to a new extension or an outbuilding, and connecting cookers, water heaters, showers and other fixed appliances. Fault finding is a big part of my week too, so if a breaker keeps tripping, a socket has stopped working or half a room has gone dead, I test the circuit, trace where it's failing and repair or replace whatever caused it. Security lights, floodlights, outdoor sockets and gate power all fall to me as well. Homes make up a good share of what I do, from single rooms and apartments through to maisonettes where the wiring has aged and needs proper attention. I also work in shops, offices, salons, small workshops and rental units, where a landlord or manager needs the electrics sorted without the place being torn apart. My patch is Nairobi and the areas around it, so I'm regularly in Westlands, Kilimani, Lang'ata, Karen, South B, Kasarani and Embakasi, and I travel out to Ruaka, Kikuyu, Ngong, Rongai, Kiambu, Ruiru and Syokimau when the job calls for it.
Call me in and I'll diagnose before I replace anything, so you pay for the actual fault rather than a guess dressed up as a repair. I'll tell you in plain terms what I've found, what putting it right involves and what I'd leave well alone, which means you get to decide with the full picture in front of you. Where a repair will genuinely hold, I repair it. Where a cable, fitting or breaker is past saving, I'll say so instead of patching something that fails again a month later and costs you twice. I work tidy and I close up properly, testing circuits before I leave and making sure boards, covers and terminations are safe, so you're not left with something exposed in a room you use every day. Handling both the quick jobs and the bigger installations means you don't have to chase one person for a socket this week and someone else for a rewire the next. Knowing my way around Nairobi and the estates surrounding it also helps, because you get an electrician who can actually find you and turn up when your power problem needs sorting.
